miss delhi

we were together for 12 hours
you
me
and your sister
you were a psychology student
and i was working towards
a diploma in psychosis
(i graduated 2 years later)
your sister with us always
warning of the misery
of interracial marriage
and frowning when our hands touched
you said your life was idyllic
(in what i imagined to be a land of pomegranetes and bells)
i said i'd read (some of ) the bhagavad gita
your sister said there was no god
only science
you said come with me to india
where you would swap your jeans
for a sari
and i would swap mine for orange robes
your sister said that would be impossible
you said you'd once been crowned miss delhi
your sister said you had brought shame on the family
you said you had a beautiful body
your sister coughed
she smiled almost laughed when we parted
me to stand by a darkening roadside
hoping for a ride
and you to wait for a plane
you said we were destined to meet
and would never be parted
some hours later
ignored by drivers
i watched your plane disappear over the eastern horizon
