automatic pilot

i watched your plane gain height
shrink
become misted by cloud

as it banked to the left
it appeared to become unstable
then it levelled
and took you away to stockholm

in that uncertain moment
i thought of another
with african hair
perfect feet
and how she'd said to call

12 days later
i saw your plane
emerge from illuminated clouds
and watched intently
for any sign of instability
(it bounced a little as the tyres shrieked)

i walked without pausing towards you
